Ok.  We're about half way through the season.  Time to revisit those 10 "Bold" Predictions that I made a few months back.  Some were good, some where just awful.  Here we go.

- Randy Johnson will win 27+ games for the New York Yankees, but still lose out to Johan Santana for the Cy Young.

WRONG - I still think Johnson will win 20, but 27 looks out of reach.  Also, Santana actually looks human.  Could the AL CY Young actually go to Jon Garland???

- With all the distraction and injuries, Barry Bonds will hit less than 30 HRs for the first time in 14 seasons.  Overall, major league baseball will see a dramatic drop in HR totals.  By the way, Adam Dunn will win the HR title.

CLOSE - Bonds has been a no-show and Dunn is still within range.  Will somebody please wake up Derek Lee from his dream!

- The AL East pennant will come down to the Yankees......and the Baltimore Orioles.  The RedSox will falter as Matt Clement never lives up to the hype and Schilling and Wells spend significant time on the DL.

CLOSE - I still think it'll be the Yanks and the O's.  Clement has been better than I thought.  Schilling and Wells have been non-factors.

- The Detroit Tigers (who lost over 100 games in 2002 and 2003) will battle for the AL Central, only to lose out to the Minnesota Twins in the final week of the season.

DRAW - Who saw the White Sox coming on?  Otherwise, Detroit would only be 5 games behind.

- The San Francisco Giants, w/o Bonds for most of the season (see above), will win the NL West.  Armando Benitez will save 50+ games for the Giants and will be considered for the NL Cy Young Award.

WAY OFF!! - I still think the F. Alou will figure out how to make a run at the division.  Benitez going down killed the Giants chances (even more than Bonds).

- Mark Prior and Kerry Wood will win a total of 10 games b/t them (injuries, injuries, injuries)

CLOSE - They have a total of 9 wins.  We'll see if they can get one more.

- Preston Wilson will win the Comeback Player of the Year honors.  He'll stay healthy for most of the season and hit 30+ HRs w/ 100+ RBIs.

CLOSE - Wilson's having a good year, but Ensberg is having an AWESOME Year.

- The newly formed Washington Nationals will win more games than the Toronto Blue Jays, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Arizona Diamondbacks.

CORRECT - Go Nationals!!!

- The Oakland A's will battle the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (stupid name!!) for the AL West title.  Billy Beane will once again prove he is the best GM in baseball (yes, better than Theo Epstein).

CORRECT - They're beginning to make their run.

- Finally......., the New York Yankees will win the World Series over the SF Giants in 6 games.  I'll take a week of vacation during the series, and spend hundreds of $$$ to enjoy every moment.

HALF CORRECT - Those Giants ruined everything....

Well, there you go.  We'll see how the predictions hold up in the second half.  Go Yanks!!!!

It's the weekend and I'm taking a quick break from some of my studies.

As the upcoming baseball season quickly approaches, I can't help but be saddened by all the "other stuff" surrounding the sport. How did a game as pure as baseball become so corrupt.

If any of you have ever played the game, you know that there is more to baseball than just hitting homeruns. People like McGwire, Canseco and Sosa may have been awesome hitters, but they were far from being great baseball players. But once again, the media hyped them up to be more than who they really were, body builders in baseball uniforms.

I remember watching the congressional hearings this past week. As McGwire shared his thoughts on steroids, I became filled with anger at what "these people" had done to the game I love. There's no doubt in my mind that McGwire is guilty. There is also no doubt in my mind that Palmeiro, Thomas and Sosa are also guilty. The only difference b/t them is that McGwire is a horrendous liar. Then I started thinking about all the stars that I watched growing up. Mattingly Winfield, Ripken, Strawberry. Were they on the juice?

I don't know what will happen to the game. Maybe all the steroid controversy (and lack of HRs) will draw people away from the game. That might not be a bad thing. Baseball was never meant to be enjoyed by the casual fan.

Over the next few seasons, some of this garbage will be cleaned up. While that's good for the future of baseball, it's probably too little and too late for some things. It's sad to see that one of the greatest records in sports (Maris's HR record) was broken by group of cheaters (First McGwire, then Bonds). It's also sad that the all-time HR record will also go down in the next couple of seasons by the same cheater.

So what would baseball look like w/o roids. Here's my list of best "pure" baseball players who don't need steroids to be good.

C - Jason Kendall (the man has 67 HRs for his CAREER!; he's an underrated defensive catcher who can hit and run)
1B - Mike Sweeney (if healthy, probably one of the best pure hitters in baseball)
2B - Ray Durham
SS - Omar Vizquel
3B - Edgardo Alfonzo
OF - Mark Kotsay, Darin Erstad, Ichiro

Let's Play Ball!!!!

So I just renamed my blog site. We've gone through some restructuring within the group. We will now officially be known as "D's House of Chicken and Waffles." Chicken and Waffles you ask. It sound like a weird combination.

Speaking of weird combinations, I had lunch yesterday at Zazang. It's a korean restaurant in the south bay that offers both Cha Jang Myun (Noodles w/ Black Bean Sauce) and Pizza. Huh? How did the owner ever come up with this combination?  It's DC "Lite's" favorite place to eat.

I'm still not willing to cast my vote b/c I have yet to try their pizza.  My guess is that their pizza is proabably similar to the garbage frozen Ellios pizza I remember from my childhood.  If you've ever had one, you know that it's one notch above a piece of cardboard w/ ketchup and cheese.  Maybe I'll be daring enough one of these days.
